The Journey of a SCARF

From nimble fingers
to warm shoulders

1

Hands at Work

Our dedicated volunteers — many of them ouma's and oupa's in retirement homes around the city — knit and sew each scarf with remarkable care. Every loop is a small act of ubuntu.

2

You Buy, We Build

When you purchase a SCARF, the proceeds go directly toward materials for the next batch and a well-deserved cup of coffee for the volunteers. No admin fees, no laaities taking a cut — just goodwill, end to end.

3

Delivered with Dignity

The scarves are distributed to homeless individuals across Cape Town before winter bites. Each one is handed over personally, with a kind word — because warmth is more than just wool.

Our Story

A small idea,
stitched together

SCARF began quietly — the way the best things do. A few people, bound by a shared sense of brotherly love, relief, and truth, looked around and asked: what can we actually do, right now, for the most vulnerable among us?

"The strength of a community is measured not by its tallest pillars, but by how warmly it wraps those who are left out in the cold."

The answer was simple: scarves. Knitted and sewn by residents of local retirement homes — many of whom are still sharp as a tack and chuffed to have a purpose — and by community volunteers who give their Sunday afternoons to the cause.

The name SCARF is no accident. Every thread in a scarf is individually fragile — but woven together, by square and compass, they hold against any storm. That's what we're about. Pulling people together. Keeping the cold out.

We are based in Cape Town, and we are lekker proud of it. This city has a big heart, and SCARF is just one small stitch in it.

The People Behind Every Stitch

Our builders

SCARF is built on the hours freely given by good people. Here's who makes it possible.

🧓

Retirement Home Residents

Oumas and oupas whose hands still have magic in them. They knit during morning tea, after lunch, and whenever the TV's too boring — which is often.
